Satya Nadella, full name Satya Narayana Nadella, is an Indian-born business entrepreneur who served as the CEO of the computer and software corporation Microsoft from 2014 to 2016.
Nadella was born and raised in Hyderabad, India, and studied electrical engineering at Mangalore University (B.Sc., 1988). After relocating to the United States, he earned a master's degree in computer science from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee in 1990 and joined the technology staff of Sun Microsystems, Inc. In 1992, he left Sun to join Microsoft, where he worked on the creation of Windows NT, a groundbreaking operating system geared especially at corporate customers. Nadella got a master's degree in business administration at the University of Chicago while working full-time at Microsoft in 1997.
Nadella steadily progressed through the Microsoft management levels. He was named VP of Microsoft's bCentral small-business service in 1999, and he was promoted to corporate vice president of Microsoft Business Solutions two years later. He was promoted to senior vice president of research and development for Microsoft's online services division in 2007, and later served as president of the company's server and tools business, which generated $19 billion in revenue annually (2011–13). Nadella was also the executive vice president in command of Microsoft's cloud computing infrastructure, which underpins services such as Bing, the Xbox Live internet gaming system, and the Office 365 subscription-based services.
